Jeep Compass
The Jeep Compass is a comparatively small offering from the legendary off-road company. A compact SUV, it has some bold and striking designs, and delivers a practical and versatile approach to motoring in one tidy package. Made for people who want more of an 'on road' 4x4, the Compass is also able to navigate rough terrain as you'd expect. A durable car that's easy to live with.
It was introduced in 2006 and makes up part of Jeep's entry level line up. Powered by some bulky engines, there have been a few upgrades, since its release most notably in 2011 where the styling was slightly altered. The 4 door SUV has seen some strong sales figures around the world, although people didn't really warm to the original in the UK.
In terms of design, the first generation was very 'cool' indeed with a fantastic front end and some wonderful angles all over the bodywork. It really did look like something out of a computer game, and quite futuristic at that. Later models are a bit more subdued and have a sleeker finish with less of the quirkiness. The somewhat rugged exterior gives way to a comfortable and spacious interior, with enough room for 5. It's pretty durable, although there's a lot of plastic, and the controls are all chunky and straightforward. Some nice bits of chrome on the steering wheel and gear stick add a bit of life, and all trim levels are well equipped. With a sizable hatchback boot the Compass appeals to families who need something practical and uncompromising.
The Jeep is solid off road as you'd imagine, but it's geared more towards being an on road auto. Overall it's pretty good and is relatively composed through the corners, but the steering isn't as sharp as you'd like. Models with the excellent 4x4 system are great through all types of weather and don't lack traction in the slightest. A soft ride makes it very capable on some of the worst British roads, and it's simple to navigate through town and car parks alike.
Reasonably priced against the competition, there's potential to get an outstandingly good deal if you buy second hand.
