History

Netflix was the brain child of Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in 1997. Initially set up to provide DVDs in the mail for subscribers as well as sales, the founders dropped selling DVDs the following year. Netflix provided DVD rentals by mail for a flat rate with no late fees. Growth continued in the late 1990s, but beginning in the 2000s, Netflix was loosing revenue and downsized their workforce, due to various factors. However, as computer and laptop prices decreased, demand for DVD rentals increased later in the 2000s. Streaming media also became possible for the typical consumer, and Netflix added a streaming service in 2007 to its offerings. Since that time, streaming subscriptions have sky-rocketed, while DVD rentals have dropped significantly. With revenue being substantial, Netflix entered into content production, and aired its first original series in 2012.
